accounts
Accounts help manage Wagn permissions and make it easier to see who's doing what.
Every account has an associated card (typically a User card). When someone is signed in, a link to their card will show up on comments they make, in Recent Changes next to cards they've edited, etc.

How To
Getting using, and giving accounts
If you see a "Sign Up" link near the top right corner of every page, then by clicking on it you can get — or at least ask for — an account. If you don't see that link, then the only way to get an account is by someone inviting you.
Along with your account, you will have your own renamable card, which you can always get to by clicking on the "My Card" link at the top of every page. On your card you can share information about yourself, receive comments from others, etc.
Your account's roles determines what you can view, edit, etc. For more on this, see permissions.
Lost password
If you ever lose your password, just click on "Sign In", and under "Forgot your password?" give your email address. If you lose access to your email address, or forget which one was used when you got the account, you'll have to contact an Administrator to sort things out.
Inviting other people
To invite someone to Wagn, click on the "Invite a Friend" link at the top of any page (you have to have an accounts and be signed in to see this link, if your Wagn is set up to allow you to invite people at all). Add the name of the person you're inviting — you can use their real name, or a nickname, whatever you like. They can always change it later, since renaming cards is easy. Add their email address; you can also edit the Subject and Message of the email they will receive, if you like. Click "Create" and their new account information will be sent to them immediately.
Administering accounts
You can set up Wagn to give accounts to new people in several different ways — inviting people, letting them sign up (optionally requiring approval of their request by someone who already has an account), and/or adding accounts to existing cards. These options are described in some detail below.
Customization of email addresses and messages (emailed and in the website), is done in your Wagn's Config card. For example, when someone gets an account they receive an email with a subject and message you can customize, followed by their password; and you can tell Wagn what address that email should show as coming from.
Invitations
People can always get an account by having someone invite them. By default, anyone signed in can invite people using the "Invite a Friend" link near the upper-right corner of every page. You can change who can invite people by adjusting which roles have the "create accounts" permission (click on "Global permissions" in the Administrator Links section of your sidebar).
When someone sends an invitation, they are taken to a customizable web address - Invite Success by default, but it could instead be an external link. The person invited will receive an invitation email.
Requests
By default, people can request an account by clicking on "Sign Up" (near the upper-right corner of every page when not signed in), but activating the account requires approval from yourself or another Administrator. Whether or not approval is required, you can specify some custom sign-up information they will be invited to add when the make their request.
You can give one or more email addresses to send alert messages to whenever someone signs up, and Account Requests lists unanswered requests. When someone makes a request, they will be taken to a customizable web address - Request Sent by default, but it could instead be an external link. When their request is approved, they will receive an invitation email as above.
You can turn off requests (removing the "Sign Up" link) by specifying in the Options tab of the "Account Requests" card that only "Anyone Signed In" can create Account Requests.
Open Sign-up
If you want people to be able to sign up for accounts without requiring any approval:
- Make sure the Options tab of the "Account Requests" card allows "Anyone" to create Account Requests.
- Click on "Global permissions" (in the Administrator Links section of your sidebar) and allow "Anyone" to create accounts.
People who sign up will be taken to a customizable web address, Signup Success by default, but it could instead be an external link. They will also immediately be sent a sign-up email, with a different customizable subject and message from the invitation emails mentioned above.
Adding accounts to existing cards
Another way to give someone an account is on the Options tab of almost any card, where you can click on "Add a sign-in account for |card name|". Enter the email address of the person you'd like to give an account associated with that card, and they'll receive an invitation email. People who have permission to make Invitations (as described above) can add accounts to existing cards.
This is typically used in one of two ways:
- On open-edit Wagns, people may create User cards for themselves without creating an account. If at a later time they wish to have an account, it can be added to their existing User card without difficulty.
- On any Wagn, cards might be added about people who aren't directly involved — experts in the field, clients, competitors, allies, etc. If they join the site at a later time, again, it's handy to be able to give them an account associated with the already existing card. The card's type could then be changed to User, or not, depending on the individual and the community.
Blocking and restoring accounts
Administrators (or anyone else with the global permission to "administrate users") can block someone from signing in to their account. To do so, go to the Options tab of the person's User card, check the Block checkbox (just above "User Roles"), and click "Save Changes". Note that this will not sign them out if they are signed in at that moment. They will be able to continue using their account until they sign out.
Tips
- If you get a bunch of Account Requests that you know you want to deny, use a URL like http://www.wagn.org/wagn/Account_Request+*type+by_name?item=open and you can deny them all pretty quickly. (See web address for everything.)
- The account links are included in layouts with {{*account links}}
- An account — that is, an email and a password allowing sign-in — can be added to any card that is in a set that has the *accountable setting turned on. When you are on such a card, if you have the global permission to create accounts, then in its Options tab you can add an account to it. This enables you to, for example, create cards for people now who may join later, or have an Organization cardtype that can have an account.
